What some of you may not know is that I originally self-published my book in February 2013 (the original title was The Book of Maybe). I hope sharing my story with you sheds some light on the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing and helps you decide what is the best avenue for a book you are writing or have already written. More than that, I hope it illustrates the power of Maybe. My journey started many years ago. I was invited to lunch at a restaurant called Otto's in Manhattan. ![]() My friend, Peter, had a friend he wanted me to meet. I had been involved in a parent's group to reduce the amount of catalogs we receive in the mail and Peter thought his friend, a successful publisher from London, would find this project interesting. My own background was in law and accounting. I had practiced law for over 15 years but was not fulfilled. Over the years, I had been able to transition my practice and become a business consultant and life coach, but the most powerful thing that had happened in my life was that I had found a way to reduce, not the amount of catalogs we receive, but my immense stress and general worry. I had done this using a philosophy I developed called, simply, Maybe. Over lunch, it came up that this extremely successful London publisher was very stressed. He loved my stories about how the power of Maybe had transformed my own life and the lives of my clients and he appreciated my ideas about how he could reduce his stress in life (he had, by way, zero interest in my desire to reduce the printing of mailing of catalogs to help the environment!). Again, it's important to emphasize: By using these services, you do not forfeit any of your rights to the work. If a traditional publisher or agent were to approach you after your ebook has gone on sale, you are free to sell rights without any obligation to the. Here's how to publish your eBook: Prepare your manuscript and cover. Make sure your book meets our content and quality guidelines. Use your Amazon account to sign in to KDP or create a new one. Make sure your browser is updated. Go to your Bookshelf. Enter your information for each section. You have everything you need to start sharing your message today—fingers, keyboard, and the Internet. Amazon Kindle Fire. Even if they don't consider themselves writers, most people dream of writing a book. And there's never been a better time to do so. The stigma of self-publishing is fading away,. ![]() By the end of the meal, he threw me his card and said, 'When you're ready to write your first book, call me.' Over the weeks that followed, Peter insisted that I write his friend and tell him I was ready to write my first book. After some hesitation, I followed the path of Maybe. After I sent the email, I was put in touch with a colleague of the London publisher's in New York and I was off and running writing my book. I am not a writer by trade and at that time I had very little experience penning anything other than memos and contracts. For some reason, that did not stop me. I just started to write. After six months, I was done writing a one hundred and forty page book. I sent it to the representative of the London publisher. His response -- 10 days later -- was, 'You need to either take a writing class or hire an editor. You can resubmit after you figure it out.' I remember thinking to myself, 'Maybe I should call some people and try to understand what you submit to a publisher when you are writing a book!' It didn't take long to find out that the answer was something called a book proposal. So, for the next three months I wrote my book proposal and got the names of three agents from people I knew. I submitted the proposal to these agents. Two were interested but ultimately one offered to represent me. She had represented some famous self-help authors including Richard Carlson, who wrote Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, and I felt it was a good fit. Now my new agent was telling me I needed to hire an editor and she recommended someone. It was a beautiful fit. Working with this editor, I turned my proposal back into a short book we all felt good about. I was ready to send it out to publishers. My agent sent my rewritten book out to several big publishers and I immediately got rejected. The overall response was, 'We love the concept but the author is unknown and has no platform.' I didn't even know what having a platform meant, but for over a year I built one. I became a blogger, I made YouTube videos, created an author Facebook page, starting tweeting and pinning on Pinterest. I begged my agent to send out the book again and against her better judgment -- I was no Wayne Dyer! Over a one-year period, we came close to a deal twice but ultimately my 'unknown' status prevailed and all I had was a bunch of new rejection letters. A few years from the time of that lunch at Otto's, I found myself sitting on my couch in my apartment thinking about what my next move should be. I had a finished book in my hand and most people in the industry were telling me to wait until I had a larger following. But I had never waited for someone else to give me permission to start helping people and this book was a vehicle to spread my work. And wasn't helping people find a way to relieve suffering what it was all about? It all happened in about 15 minutes. I called Createspace, the Amazon platform for self-publishing. They were very polite and helpful, but I found it tough to make so many of the publishing and editing decisions on my own. Still, I got the help I needed from various sources and got through it. I don't remember how long the entire process took, but my book was published in paperback in February 2013 and on Kindle about a month later. I was pleased with the finished product. I joined the Kindle Select program, giving me the option to deeply discount my book or give it away for free for a limited time. After my book was self-published, I found it very time consuming to sell books. I found I was writing less and spending a lot of time trying to connect with people to get the book exposure. As an unknown author, I found most media outlets were not that responsive. But bloggers and small outlets welcomed my book. It was hard work for not that many sales. Toward the end of the 90-day period I decided to give my book away for free for three days. It was an easy decision for me because I'd written the book to help people and I had not been very successful in marketing it even though my web presence and following had grown significantly over the years. I found a site called Authors Marketing Club. They connect you with several websites that advertise your free books. Some sites were free and others cost $5 or $10 dollars. I also listed my book on any other sites I found on my own. My colleague also mentioned a book promotion site called Bookbub, which you have to apply to and which accepts books and/or authors who are a bit more established or well-known. This is where the platform that I had built for several years paid off. By this time, I had over 10,000 Facebook followers, a popular website, a successful YouTube video, and some interesting published interviews. For reasons I will never exactly know, Bookbub accepted me and for a few hundred dollars they listed my book for a three-day period. I was at a hair salon the first day in June when the free offer of my book began. I checked my stats and almost fell off my chair. Within hours, my book had been downloaded over 10,000 times. Who were all these wonderful people downloading my book? Suddenly, I was number one on the free bestseller list on Amazon for self-help books. I stayed number one for three days and number two for all free books. I also managed to stay on the Amazon bestseller list for sold books for a short time after the promotion, smack dab in the motivational book category right next to -- you guessed it -- Wayne Dyer. When the free book promotion was completed, more than 29,000 books had been downloaded and it was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life. All of these people had my book! Better yet, MAYBE some of them would suffer less in their lives after reading it. My agent and I had not spoken in a while. When I called her she didn't really know what to make of the entire matter, but she sent my book out again to ten publishers and sure enough, this time I had my choice of publisher! I had several meetings but the minute I met Marian Lizzi, the managing editor at Perigee, I knew my book had found its home. I called my agent and they negotiated a deal. Having a big publisher was much easier than being on my own. It opened up many doors for me. I am now blogging for The Huffington Post and Psychology Today. I am launching my book at the Tribeca Barnes and Noble on November 4th, which is a dream come true! I also have several large media outlets considering me for articles and as well as television appearances for when my book comes out. The doors have really swung open. I am trying to make the most of this opportunity and have my book reach as many people as possible. My advice to anyone writing a book? Unless you are well known and you can sell books regardless of who the publisher is, try to get an agent and get your book in front of some publishers. If you get rejected, try to get real feedback from people with experience in the industry and make adjustments to your work if it feels appropriate. Then go back out there again and try to find an agent. I would give the process six to eighteen months. If every door is starting to close and you are tired of waiting, then my advice is definitely to self-publish. If the book supports a career you are already in, give lectures and sell books at events. If this is a new career for you, make relationships with bloggers and take advantage of Amazon's Kindle Select program, then give your book away for free or at a discount to create a fan base. Spend some time marketing your book creatively each week and then. Start writing your next book. Enjoy that your work is out there and know that MAYBE your books will sell over time or MAYBE you will get a major publishing deal like I did. There is also the possibility that you will simply be satisfied just to get your work out into the world and that you'll be joyful each time one person experiences your work. Whatever you do, don't give up. Keep your dream alive! My agent called the other day and told me that if my book does not sell at least 25,000 copies it might be difficult to get me another book deal. I got off the phone and had to laugh. The journey of uncertainty never ends! Will The Gift of Maybe sell 25,000 copies? Instead of worrying, I choose to embrace the basic tenet of my book. MAYBE I will sell 25,000 books but if I don't. Just MAYBE I can find another way to get my next book out there. I'll keep you posted. GOOD LUCK on your journey publishing a book! And don't forget, life always offers MAYBE even when you can't clearly see the possibilities in front of you. Keep hope alive. The right decision will inevitably reveal itself over time. For some writers, electronic publishing is a far-out idea that comes straight from science fiction. For others, it”s an easyand profitableway to get published and reach a wider audience of readers. If you want to be in the latter group who uses all the amazing new technologies to get their books published in a wide variety of formats, to network with writers all over the world, and to increase the number of their promotional strategies, then is a must-have resource for your library. We spoke with the authors Richard Curtis, literary agent at Richard Curtis Associates, Inc. And owner of the e-publishing company e-reads, and William Thomas Quick, author and e-publishing expert, on the various opportunities available for writers in the world of electronic publishing. Is the future of publishing really on the Web? The present of publishing is on the Web. Not only is a growing number of users downloading e-books, but countless numbers of customers order print books on the Web, including books printed on demand. And, as we say in our book, print on demand is definitely a form of electronic book. Why does a writer need to know about e-publishing? A writer needs to know enough about the current and future status of e-publishing to make a reasonably informed decision about e-publishing his or her work. At the very least, a writer should be able to distinguish among the basic e-book formats, learn how customers order e-books online, and understand how the compensation works. Why should a writer consider the e-publishing option? Traditional publishing has become harder and harder to break into, so self-publishing electronically or publishing through an e-book publisher is a viable alternative these days. One day the compensation will be on a par with that of traditional publishing. And at some point, there may not be any other options! While currently not the primary means of publication, e-publishing will eventually become the major method of publishing, promoting, and distributing the written word. There is at least some small advantageand perhaps a very large onein being an early adapter of any new technology that eventually becomes successful. E-publishing shows every sign of doing just that. Are there businesses on the Web that writers should be wary of? How can a writer recognize these groups? The first thing to watch out for is “publishers” that want a lot of your money to “publish” your work. We discuss how to spot these types of businesses thoroughly in our book. Writers have always been vulnerable to scam artists preying on their vanity and vulnerability. It really shouldn”t cost you a lot, if anything, to publish your work online. If someone offers to do it for you for an exorbitant amount of money, beware. There are a host of so-called “vanity” operations that prey on the inexperienced writer by offering to “publish” their work for what turns out to be a substantial fee. How is your book different from others on e-publishing? It is concise and practical. Writers will be able to read this book, make an informed decision as to whether e-publishing is a good option for them, and if they decide it is, proceed to e-publish and promote their work. We tried to concentrate on issues that are both timeless and general, so that our book won”t be completely obsolete the moment it is releasedan outcome that afflicts many of the more specific how-to books that deal with the rapidly changing world of the Internet and the World Wide Web. We both have unparalleled experience in writing for the Web and publishing for it, and Richard is also a leading literary agent as well as the publisher of an e-book firm. The Amazon Kindle is the bestselling eBook reader in the world. It’s also the bestselling item on Amazon.com. But did you know that you don’t need a Kindle e-reader to read Kindle eBooks? Before I tell you about this, let me explain a few things. First of all, Kindles can read books in the Kindle, PDF, and a couple other formats. Ed - Kindle edition by Sam Hughes. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading Ed. Search the world's most comprehensive index of full-text books. They cannot read books in other eBook reader formats. This is done intentionally in an attempt to prevent you from reading the competition’s eBooks. Amazon does not want you buying Barnes and Noble eBooks. They only want you to buy Amazon eBooks. This is the same for Barnes and Noble and Apple and pretty much anybody that sells eBooks. ![]() ![]() ![]() Their e-readers will read the standard PDF format and some other formats not specific to anyone else’s e-reader. But nobody wants you buying the competition’s books What I find amusing about this whole issue is the fact that you don’t even need an e-reader to read these eBooks. Amazon tries so hard to keep you from buying the competition’s books. They also try hard to keep you from reading your Kindle eBooks on anyone else’s e-reader. They do this by publishing their eBooks in proprietary formats that only their devices can read. But then what do they do? They turn around and write an app (software program) called the Kindle App, that can run on any device except the competition. This Kindle application can run your Kindle books on your computer, smart phone, tablet, iPad, or any other device; just as long as it’s not the competition’s device. What does this mean to you? It means that if you don’t want to buy a Kindle, or just don’t want to buy one now, you don’t have to. You can buy all the eBooks you want from Amazon without laying out the cash for the Kindle. This is very handy if you don’t like the current model of Kindle or you have some other device that will work already. Personally, I’m waiting for a color Kindle. Not like the Nook with the color LCD screen. I mean one that uses color e-paper, just like the current Kindle uses black and white e-paper. Color e-paper has been invented and works, it’s just not in production for low priced consumer models yet. Anyway, back to the point at hand. Now here’s another thing you might not have known. Pretty much everybody else has an App too. So if you have some Barnes and Noble eBooks, you don’t need a Nook to read them. You can download the Barnes and Noble app and read those books anywhere you want. Except of course, on the competition’s e-reader. I have an iPad as my eBook reader. Prior to buying it, I tested the Kindle and the Nook. I purchased eBooks for both of them. Now I have the Kindle and the Nook apps on my iPad so I can read all my eBooks regardless of where they came from. Now here’s my last treat for you. Did you know that you not only don’t need to spend money on a Kindle, there’s a good chance you don’t even need to spend any on the books! I’m not suggesting theft, piracy, or anything illegal here. The truth is, there are millions of free eBooks. The last official count I was able to find was in 2008 when there were over 1.8 million free eBooks. These were not all Kindle books but the total of all free eBooks available online. There are many free eBooks available offline too. Like at your public library. Many e-readers have the ability to read the format used at public libraries. According to Amazon, there are over 950,000 free kindle items just on their site. This includes books, magazines, newspapers, and blogs. That’s enough to keep you busy for a long time! Many of the free eBooks on Amazon are publications in which the copyrights have run out. This makes them public domain works which is why Amazon can give them away for free. Another source of free, public domain books is Project Gutenberg. They have over 36,000 free eBooks. These are old classics that were originally published by reputable publishers. Since the copyrights have run out, they have been able to scan the original books and offer them online. They offer their books in many different formats so you can use just about any e-reader you want. You can visit their website by clicking. Going back to Amazon for a moment, I should mention one more thing. Amazon’s free eBooks are not just limited to public domain works. They constantly have specials where they offer books by today’s authors for free. For example, I wanted to purchase Steven Pressfield’s book “Do the Work.” When I arrived at Amazon I was surprised to see that the Kindle Edition was actually free. The hardcover edition was around $13.00. As of this writing, they are both around $6.00. So if you visit Amazon fairly often and watch closely, you could accumulate quite a library for not much money So there you have it! Now you can have an entire eBook library without having to spend a dime on an e-reader. Or, in the case of this article, an entire Kindle library without having to own a Kindle If you enjoyed this article or have additional information to add, please feel free to leave a comment. Many Kindle Books I have purchased seem to have DRM on them so when I want to have them read aloud on my android device I must use a text to speech app that will copy a chapter or several pages and paste it into the app like “Read Aloud” and read aloud those pages. However about 80% of my Kindle books only allow me to copy and paste from 1 to 4 pages than a note comes up saying I cannot copy and paste beyond the amount I have chosen. (I already have a Kindle App on my Android). I have tried using Accessibility functions but they are often “crippling” in the cumbersome way they function and require multiple hard pushes on the screen to get a response and often found myself “locked out of my own android” trying to negotiate their reading of a Kindle Book without DRM interference or restrictions. My friend has an iphone and the accessibility functions work in less threatening manner. Does there exist a Voice Over App that will read my Kindle books on my Android that will not limit my reading to an Accessibility App or DRM constraints or will it be necessary for me to purchase a Kindle Fire Device or iPhone to read my Kindle Books aloud without DRM or Accessibility Functions hindering the entire process? Hi Tom, Thanks for your comment! I have not done much with trying to do what you’re trying to do. However, I suspect this difficulty is intentionally built into our devices in order to encourage us to buy the Audible versions of our Kindle books. Audible now interacts beautifully with Kindle. When you purchase a Kindle book, and the Audible version of that book with the same Amazon account, a player bar appears below each page of your Kindle book. All you have to do is click the play button below the page and it starts reading to you. This happens regardless of what device you read and listen on, as long as you’re using the Kindle app. It also highlights the words on the kindle book as it reads along, and keeps everything synced to the page you last read. I know this is not helpful if there is no audible version of a book, or if you don’t want to spend the extra money. But it is a great feature and works very well. And avoids the headaches you mention in this post. If I come across another solution that works the way you’d like, I’ll add to this reply. Thanks again for your visit and comment! I like the facts, they were more understanding, everyone want to keep their costomers eyes and patriotage to themselves. But I ordered a kindle fire. Nice and empressing. This may sound crazy. I wanted a reader for my Bibles, strong concordance, dictionary, and about (6) game. Study notes, journaling. But mostly lots of reading. I didn’t want to bring my big Bible to the lake. Just wanted something smaller, and nightlight build in. I can’t make up my mind. I want to read the bible no matter where I am. On line or off. _______________________ “I just finished reading your eBook. It was unbelievably helpful. I loved how you broke down each piece step by step with very clear instructions and pictures. The Upper Hudson Library System (UHLS) recently announced that as of March 14, the 29 public libraries which serve Albany and Rensselaer counties are boycotting all future electronic content purchases from HarperCollins (HC) Publishers. One of the largest publishing houses in the world, HarperCollins changed their policy in the sale of their e-book titles that sets a license limit of 26 checkouts per title on all e-books purchased for library use. 'The 29 member libraries of the UHLS jointly agreed to institute and announce the boycott of HC e-book titles in response to the 26 limit move,' said Timothy Burke, executive director of UHLS. '(HarperCollins) has, in the wake of the backlash after their 26 limit was announced, claimed that the limit number is not set in stone but it simply a starting point for further conversations about the use of e-books by libraries.' Richard Naylor, director of William K. Sanford Town Library said across the country, libraries have been trying to get HarperCollins to go back to the principle of purchasing copies for one use at a time. 'The American Library Association is also working on the issue,' he said. 'From my point of view the problem is not with new books but with older ones. With a collection of 200,000 books we would not know when a book would cease to be available and how this would affect costs over the years.' Advertisement This new policy requires libraries to re-purchase HarperCollins e-books after the book has been checked out 26 times. This is a radical change, according to the Sanford library's May newsletter, from the purchase agreements used by other e-content publishers that typically sell the library the use of the file for as long as the library wants to provide it to their users. Overdrive software, caught in the middle, has responded by taking HarperCollins out of its main catalog and creating a new separate catalog for those e- books. Other book publishers that Overdrive software has available in their catalog includes Penguin, Elsevier, Houghton-Mifflin, Wiley, McGraw-Hill, Random House and Simon & Schuster, Naylor said. 'There is a fairly good selection but it is limited both by the number of books that aren't available at all in eBook format and because Harper-Collins is one of the major publishers and has some major authors under contract such as Joyce Carol Oates,' Naylor said. Some of the more well-known authors HarperCollins publish that both Burke and Naylor listed include David Attenborough, Bill Branon, Michael Burleigh, Kathryn Casey, Paulo Coelho, Bernard Cornwell, Max Hastings, Elmore Leonard, C.S. 'However, some people choose a shorter lending period (one week). It is certainly feasible, and it has happened that a book reached its 26 circs within 11 months. We think that HarperCollins chose 26 circs because it is approximately one year's worth of circulation with a two week loan period. Publishing great authors since 1817. HarperCollins published the following statement in Albany Libraries Examiner written by Jennifer McIntosh: 'We have serious concerns that our previous e-book policy, selling e-books to libraries in perpetuity, if left unchanged, would undermine the emerging e-book eco-system, hurt the growing e-book channel, place additional pressure on physical bookstores, and in the end lead to a decrease in book sales and royalties paid to author.' ![]() Other publishers continue the age-old principle of buying a book that can be loaned to one reader at a time for as long as the library wants to retain it. 'HarperCollins is offering a discount on the repurchase of a title from them after the 26 checkout limit has been reached.' Other publishers do not have a checkout limit tied to the purchase of a title, Burke said. There is no need for a library to re-purchase titles very often. For more information about UHLS boycotting HarperCollins, visit or contact Timothy Burke, executive director at or call 437-9880 Ext. Explanation What is this all about? HarperCollins intends to. What are you asking me to do? Until this policy is revoked, join us by not buying any new books or ebooks published by HarperCollins or any of its imprints: Amistad, Avon, Avon A, Avon Inspire, Avon Red, Balzer + Bray, Caedmon, Collins, Ecco, Eos, Greenwillow Books, Harper, Harper Business, Harper Design, Harper Paperbacks, Harper Perennial, Harper Perennial Modern Classics, HarperAudio, HarperBibles, HarperCollins Children's Audio, HarperCollins Children's Books, HarperCollins e-Books, HarperFestival, HarperLuxe, HarperOne, HarperTeen, ItBooks, Katherine Tegen Books, Rayo, Walden Pond Press, and William Morrow. In addition, support your local library if it chooses to participate in the boycott and explaining your actions. You can also sign the at Change.org. The boycott will end as soon as HarperCollins agrees not to limit the number of times a library can loan each ebook. Don't library materials wear out or get stolen? Are you trying to get a better deal for ebooks than for books printed on paper? It's true that library materials don't have an unlimited shelf-life, though many libraries still circulate books that are well over a hundred years old. Given the pace of digital innovation, there's a good chance that ebook files libraries purchase today will be obsolete within a few years. For now, libraries have arrangements with publishers and ebook vendors that include some restrictions on ebooks lending, such as two-week loan limits and one-borrower-at-a-time. These restrictions make borrowing or loaning an ebook much like borrowing or loaning a traditional book. Are you trying to make it more difficult to publish ebooks profitably? We hope not, and we don't believe that we are. Readers, publishers, and libraries have relied on each other for hundreds of years. Successful publishers are closely associated with happy readers and busy libraries. While circulation limits on ebooks might encourage libraries to buy additional digital copies of some ebooks, that's just speculation: libraries have limited budgets, especially in the current economy, so there is a good chance that libraries will spend the same amount on ebooks they are already spending but offer less variety because they would have to buy more copies of the most popular items. In the long term, ensuring libraries' ability to circulate ebooks might actually be more profitable. Libraries encourage literacy and reading, helping to sow the seeds for publishers’ continued growth. Many of the most active library users are also among the most frequent book purchasers. Do you hate HarperCollins? Are you angry at them? Why single them out? We aren't anti-anyone, but we are opposed to limiting the number of times a library can loan each ebook. For that reason, we support boycotting any publisher that chooses to impose these limits. For now, HarperCollins is the only publisher to have imposed such restrictive lending terms. Who is participating in the boycott? A lot of readers and libraries. Library Journal has been keeping track of. Where can I read more? We also recommend reading what at Loose Cannon Librarian. Who created this website? Librarians Brett Bonfield and Gabriel Farrell put this website together. They believe strongly in library users' rights, but don't speak for anyone except themselves. Now imagine if, upon seeing your $10 in my PayPal account, I refunded your money with the message, “Sorry, I only accept gifts from readers in the UK.” Crazy, right? ![]() But that’s pretty much what the publishing industry is doing by restricting their titles based on a prospective buyer’s geographical location. I recently tried to purchase a particular eBook & went to the Amazon website, only to find that while a Kindle version did exist, it was only available to U.K. I live in the U.S., so I was out of luck. Or so I thought. I found out that buying the book was as simple as changing my US address to a UK address on the Kindle management page. Since nothing is ever mailed to the address listed there, you don’t have to worry about them sending anything to the address that you pick. A word of caution, though: while researching the topic, I learned that some people have had their Amazon account suspended for changing their address too often. Which got me to thinking, why is Amazon making it so difficult for me to give them money? After all, here I was, begging them to let me fork over $10 or so for a copy of a book that it would cost them nothing to produce. And they wouldn’t take my money simply because of where my two feet happened to be contacting the Planet Earth at the time. It sure is hard to be a customer these days, isn’t it?:) I’m sure that the reasons come down to a lot of complicated contract issues between the author and the publisher. The author of the book likely only granted his publisher UK distribution rights, and the author either hasn’t yet assigned the US rights or the assignee has chosen to do sit on them. Amazon is just doing what they can to honor the contracts that these parties have in place, so they’re not at fault. On the contrary, what they’ve accomplished is astonishing. As of, Amazon is now selling more eBooks than it is print books. The publishing industry needs to catch up with the year 2010. Yes, I know that they like to have their theatres of operation and their fancy contractual assignments and whatnot, but at the end of the day, all I wanted to do was pay someone $10 for the privilege of legally reading their book on my Kindle. Would they have preferred that I instead checked it out from the library for free? Or simply, ahem, “acquired” a free copy of the eBook? 'Before that', he said, 'I didn't write anything. I was just one of those ordinary people. I was running a jazz club, and I didn't create anything at all.' He was inspired to write his first novel, (1979), while watching a game. In 1978, Murakami was in watching a game between the and the when, an American, came to bat. According to an oft-repeated story, in the instant that Hilton hit a double, Murakami suddenly realized that he could write a novel. He went home and began writing that night. Murakami worked on Hear the Wind Sing for ten months in very brief stretches after working days at the bar. He completed the novel and sent it to the only literary contest that would accept a work of that length, winning first prize. Murakami's initial success with Hear the Wind Sing encouraged him to continue writing. A year later, he published a sequel,. In 1982, he published, a critical success. The first two novels were not widely available in English translation outside Japan until 2015, although an English edition, translated by with extensive notes, had been published by as part of a series intended for Japanese students of English. Murakami considers his first two novels to be 'immature' and 'flimsy,' and has not been eager to have them translated into English. A Wild Sheep Chase, he says, was 'the first book where I could feel a kind of sensation, the joy of telling a story. When you read a good story, you just keep reading. When I write a good story, I just keep writing.' Wider recognition [ ] In 1985, Murakami wrote, a dream-like fantasy that took the magical elements of his work to a new extreme. Murakami, in addition to receiving most of the major literary awards in Japan, has been nominated several times for the Nobel Prize. Yet, his relationship with the Japanese literary community proper (known as the Bundan) has not been a particularly friendly one. One of Murakami’s central and enduring themes is a persistent warning not to suppress our fundamental desires in favor of the demands of society at large. Murakami’s writing over his career reveals numerous recurring motifs, but his message has also evolved, creating a catalogue of works that reveals Murakami to be a challenging author. Many of those challenges lie in Murakami’s blurring of genre as well as his rich blending of Japanese and Western mythologies and styles—all while continuing to offer narratives that attract and captivate a wide range of readers. Murakami is, as Ōe Kenzaburō once contended, not a “Japanese writer” so much as a global one, and as such, he merits a central place in the classroom in order to confront readers and students, but to be challenged as well. Reading, teaching, and studying Murakami serves well the goal of rethinking this world. It will open new lines of inquiry into what constitutes national literatures, and how some authors, in the era of blurred national and cultural boundaries, seek now to transcend those boundaries and pursue a truly global mode of expression. It seems to be based on her own experiences and moves readers in unusual ways. Can her story really be true? Both Aomame and Tengo notice that the world has grown strange; both realise that they are indispensable to each other. While their stories influence one another, at times by accident and at times intentionally, the two come closer and closer to intertwining.
